Our visionary leader late Dr. Bhausaheb Mandavkar founder president of the institution was born in small town Kalamb. Despite his financial hurdles and continued his studies and completed graduation. After this completion in 1957 he won the Gold medal in MA from Nagpur University. He started his career as primary teacher. With his endless efforts, he worked for many renowned and prestigious institutes as like Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar College, Amravati. On 20th Jun 1983 Dr. Bhau Mandavkar started college in the name of his Mother-in-law Indira under the Dr. Y.M. Donde S.S. Trust. This was very much successful step towards the societal service about education. He firm believed that education is a means for all round development of rural and tribal students, to make them capable to touch the new horizons of knowledge and employment for their better future. Hence he wanted the people of this rural, tribal & undeveloped area to have higher education with open access system, irrespective of caste, colour, creed, & academic performance in earlier years. He was the first Principal of Indira Mahavadyalaya ,Kalamb  Initially there were only finger counted students admitted in the Arts and Commerce faculty having little bit difference in age group of their professors and enjoyed the teaching learning in small huts worked as classrooms. Bhausaheb was very strict at workplace in his administration. If somebody fails to play his role properly then he would be principal to him and most astonishing fact is that afterward he behaved as friend and reduce the tension and disappointment of the employee.

He is counted among the great literary figure not only in Maharashtra but all over India. He initiated his literary career with the writings of biography of Tukdoji Maharaj as he was closely associated with him.  He was poet, story writer, novelist .In his literary pursuit he has over hundred books and handled various issues of society. His most notable work was ‘Kolam’ which have an action plan to expose this deprived community along with their traditions, customs, and pain and relaxes etc. His milestones are Aausa on Mahanubhav Panth,  Chintan ,Chintnika are more popular among the spectator and researchers of Marathi Literature .  His Book ‘Muktagiiri’ bagged the prestigious award of Govt of Mah. He had been presided the 43rd Vidarbha Sahitya Sammelan at Lakni in Maharashtra. Apart from that he was conscious researcher and P.hD. supervisor and near about 20 students benefitted by his able guidance in various universities. He headed many committees and cells at Sant Gadge baba Amravati University and Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj University.

During his lifetime he was not only awarded and honored by Govt. of Maharashtra but appointed on Maharashtra Rajya Mahotsav Samiti and Loksahitya Sahitya Puraskar Samiti. His contribution in social and educational reform was instrumental. He headed the Maharashtra Rajya Pathpustak Saimiti popularly known as Balbharti and Member of Marathi Samiti. 

He was a man of simplicity and integrity. He was committed to literature, Education and Social service. I recall incident in my remembrance that he always patted on my back with great love, affection and inquired about my well being. He usually asked about students who came to admission at college. But they did not know that a man whom they are speaking is prominent person of institution. After some years he was not in position to speak and identify the people properly. He donated his body organs after his death. He handed over the college affairs and girls hostel to the apex body of trust. He was always in the hearts of employee and people associated with him.

Since then it has been 40 long years ‘Indira Mahavidyalaya’ is leading institution in the region and university maintaining its illustrious legacy and impeccable Academic and Extracurricular record.  With defined vision and mission the institute is serving with post graduation and several value added and skill enhancement courses along with successful implementation of NEP 2020 and shaping the future and brings a culture of peace and discipline which country needs today.
